Motor corrosion

On a boat I may get the late model 4 stroke motor has signs of neglect as far as flushing the salt away. There is white stuff clogging the water intake screen and whitish stuff on the foot up to the cavitation plate.

Will a good flushing with dawn get all that out? Can you soak the foot in dawn and dissolve the white stuff?

Redbelly I can't answer your question. I'm sure some of the others can, but I would be more afraid of the corrosion I can't see. My .02.

White stuff equals corrosion, all engines used in saltwater will get it, some sooner than others.....Dawn cuts grease not corrosion....

But, sounds like good haggling material..."Look at the corrosion, best I can do is this amount of money with all the corrosion.....

The ONLY thing I know that is effective in getting salt out of the internal cooling system is Salt-Away. You can get some, mix it in a tank you can lower your motor into (just for running, not total immersion). The directions used to say to let the engine run for about 20-30 minutes. Stop it, wait about 10 minutes and run it again for about 10-20 minutes. Stop it wait overnight and repeat the process. Be prepared to clean all screens and to check the waterpump after a good cleaning too.

I knows about that n theres haggling. I will be bartering so to speak. My cabinets for his boat.....

A little "sweat equity" never hurt nobody.

Phosphoric acid will dissolve the corrosion. However,after the corrosion is dissolved you will see lots of dimples where the corrosion once was.

I'll be'a wuderin' how deep them thar dimples be inside the motor!!

That's my point. If you can apply the phosphoric acid before you buy it you will know. If you don't buy,he'll have a clean motor.
