for the wrench heads tach question

Boat runs fine and the tack reads what I believe to be right to about 4500 RPM. When I open the throttle all the way it pegs out to 7000 RPM but I know the engine ain't running that high. It went to just around 5500 at full throttle before yesterday, right where it was supposed to be. What could cause that, not that it is a big deal just bugs the crap out of me. Thanks in advance for any advice

What brand tach? Regardless of brand, if it did it suddenly, may be time for a nw tach.
