CARABELLE 10-21-06

Post by dolphinatic »

Stopped by and picked up some frozen bait from Mike in Lanark, then headed down to Dockside in Carabelle. Had spent all week working on a 24' Osprey, so the owner decided to take her out for a run before putting it in her new home at the new Boatclub in Carabelle. We stopped by the BP and picked up 6 dozen live pins (@ $8 / dozen :o ). On the water at 7:30 AM and headed to the first spot of the day in 70 ft. We were marking nice structure and alot of fish, so down went an LY.....nothing. A whole squid......nothing. Cigar minnow.......nothing. Live pinfish.....BAM !!!!!! Immediately hooked into something BIG and all I could do is hold on. After 30 seconds and alot of tugging......broke off! On with another leader and down with another pin.......BAM !!! This time I was ready and brought up a nice 26" Red grouper  Oh yeah....my buddy had already brought in 2 nice gags  The bite went on like this for about 45 minutes. As soon as the bite slowed, we took a break with already 2 nice red grouper (2 released), 8 gags & 1 nice red snapper. I let out about 25 ft. of anchor rope and the fun started all over again......at this point we hadn't even gotten to our marker buoy :P We proceeded to finish our limit of gags and started releasing 22" + fish one after another :smt010 When the action slowed again, we took a lunch break :lick: Decided to send out a live pin on a freeline while we recouped during lunch. About 2 minutes later, BZZZZZZZZ.......a huge king had grabbed the pin and was running for Cuba. So much for lunch. We kept sending out pins and kept fighting kings getting broke off 3 times while boating 2 . Arms sore and backs hurting, we decided to call it a day with a 140 qt. cooler so full that we couldn't shut it    Back at the boatclub at 3:00 just in enough time to watch the FSU "game." At halftime, loaded up and headed back to Tally.......What a great day on the water!!!

(Note to the webmaster TK: This was the same spot you went diving on last year with me..... LOTS of fish there....)

TOTAL FOR THE DAY: 10 GAGS (22"-32")
2 REDS (24"- 27")
2 KINGS (36" - 41")
1 RED SNAPPER (22")
ABOUT 6 BREAK OFFS (BIG GROUPER & KINGS)

Most of the fish were caught on live pinfish (best $50 I've spent lately). The snapper bit squid and mackeral. Not much action on the LY's. The kings hit both frozen mackeral and live pins freelined from the back of the boat. Even the reds hit live pinfish. Fished 70 ft. in one spot all day long. Not sure of the water temp.....never took time to look.

Will post pics later..........

I'm ready to go back because that spot is amazing on the bottom. Just hope I can shoot better this time. (I do have a few more trips under my belt).

I could be wrong but I think the bag limit for grouper includes all grouper species except for black sea bass. I thought the limit was five a person. Reds, Gags, Scamp, Black, Strawberry, and others. I know that if this is the case it was just a simple mistake but it could be a costly one if "the man" had stopped yall. I'm not judgeing just want people to be informed so a mistake isn't made.

You are correct sir on the bag limit  ......I failed to mention that we had "the old man" with us......he didn't fish.....just came along for the ride and took all the pictures. About all he was good for was helping to increase the bag limit for reds and tell us how to fish :D We stopped at a 2 man limit on the gags to save a few for next trip :lick:
