Motor damage control

Post by Redbelly »

Just wondering about the fishing in our rocky waters as to who has ever damaged a foot with a tiller motor?

If you did was it on lockdown unitentionally?

What I am getting at is I am thinking most damage happens to "fixed" motors, ones with T&T, or bigger heavier motors .

Or guys that run WOT....hehehehe....

Most I know that have lost foots have remote steering type.

Who started the weird rumor that we fish in rocky waters?

I have had an Incident with said rocks. :(

It was in November of 2003 I was running back to the fort from the Gray Mare Rock area. I was offshore from Black Rock when I felt and heard just a "click", No jar or jolt, just "Click". The guy fishing with me that day said, "You want to look at it". I said, No we can look at it back at the ramp, since we were still moving I didn't want to take the chance stopping and in not going back in gear again. Back at the ramp we looked at the damage  . I still had forward but no reverse. Its all just part of playing with those rocks.

To answer your question; 115 Yamaha TT running around 40 MPH at the time.

Ty, that looks a little worse than mine did but mine happened on the west side. Too fast, too shallow.

Redbelly, you know I have not had a problem with the 15 hp tiller motor on my little boat. Maybe your onto something here...

I normally run my tiller with out the lock so that it just kicks up when it hits. So far so good  Although, if I am at WOT and hit something hard enough i don't think that the "kick up" maneuver would help but that's my .02

The only time I run WOT at Aucilla is on a high tide and out past the first pole.
I run a tiller always unlocked. I am looking at various boats, and for fishing these local waters I'm saying a tiller might be the best risk, other than a mudmotor.

The unlocked tiller motor might be a good idea. However, when running at half throttle or better, the blow has to overcome the forward thrust of the prop to kick up.

We have a new member, Ol Beater, on this forum. As k him if a tiller motor is immuned to the rocks.

I agree they are not immune, just maybe a better choice for these waters.
