Decided to take the Jon-boat today and fish the afternoon rise. Got to the ramp around lunch not much water. Idled out the river, nice sunny afternooon slight breeze. After about 45 minutes finally make around to some creeks west. Water was so shallow I could barely make the mouth of the creek in my jon-boat, had to pole in. Park in the mouth had about 3-4 ft of water so spent the next hour or so sitting there waiting on water. Finally my son picks up a small red. Few minutes later my rods doubled and some beast is taking drag, unfortunately this dude takes my line around a crab trap and cuts me off. Damn it man. We catch a couple more short reds and then my son got a nice one on. Some how we get him in the boat (no dip net) after untangling him from that same crab trap and he's 24" of "Real-live walkin-talkin fire-breathin Redfish". Lucky save and my boy is stoked. We stay at this spot a little longer but not much else happened. Move to the next creek over, but killed a lot of time on the move because of low water and didn't have much daylight left. Caught a few more short reds and headed in.
When I headed in about 5:00 a lot of crab traps were still not covered up by the water, it just never came in. Don't know the water temp cause my little boat doesn't have any type of electronics. It didn't feel any colder than last week when it was 60 degrees. Most of the fish were caught on Gulps and a couple on a Silver and black Bite-aBait. Did not catch a single trout or see one.
Not a big haul but my son got a nice on and my little boat ran-out just fine. think I'll take it a little more often.
My son and a buddy went down to Econfina on Wednesday morning. They caught a few short trout near the mouth of the river, but that was about it. They put in at daylight and fished until about 10:30 a.m.
