St. Marks 1/2/2007

Post by mjsigns »

Looking forward to capping off the holiday season with some fishing with a neighbor, he decided to back out at the last minute. Said something about work…:smt012 Thinking quickly I asked my son and his son if they wanted to go for a boat ride. The boys jumped with joy. My neighbor agreed it would be a great idea. So off to the St. Marks Fort I went with two rambunctious young boys along with the boat in tow. The word at the bait shop was the fish were way up in the river. Fish were reported as far north as the Newport Bridge. So after the final stop at the dollar store for some snacks, candy and drinks I put the boat in the river around 10:30 this morning. Bundled up and still freezing we fished our way all the way up to the Bridge in Newport. We had a few nibbles here and there in the holes but nothing to show for our efforts. The water temperature north of the power plant hovered between 64.0 and 64.2. The wind was screeching out of the north at 10-15 and made the air temp feel like 29 degrees, and there was no way to stay warm.

After reaching the bridge we did a 180 and headed back down the river with the wind at our backs (still freezing our tails). Once I hit the point where the two rivers meet, we were the only boat headed south to the mouth of the river. Couple boats were headed back in giving the “thumbs-downâ€

TODAY is only the 2nd,
Saw you on the river today, I reconize those two boys,, They look cold! when we give you the thumb down today on the river, Glad you found some fish to warm them up.

We were the three cold looking Ga folks in the 19' KeyWest. :smt006

We did finally catch 4 reds, all too small, and about 50 Croakers, all pretty small, and only two small trout.

Still more fun than working,

"The fishing made the boys forget all about the cold wind literally turned them upside down with excitement. Even though I was there only to help them bait hooks, unhook fish and getting “hangsâ€
