Fishing on the right and chuming on the left

Post by Chipola »

My wife is a real trooper always willing to go off-shore fishing with me when no fishing buds are available - and she's good while running off shore, but as soon as we cut to idle - she cuts into the chuming mood. :-? Fishing on the right and chuming on the left, then she heads for the bow with pillow and blanket until we power back up and start to head in. She'll take the wheel and navigate us home with the wind blowing her queasiness away.

Anyone know of any working sea sickness methods that would help --- if she's going to be such a great trooper, I'd like for her to at least enjoy the experience.

I'm sure you have heard of the Scopolamine patches, they work for me. I have also used the electrical wristbands, they worked somewhat. The day I used them was VERY rough and they started losing ground after awhile. :o

Meclazine HCL (also sold as Bonine) in the 12.5 mg size the nght before you go fishing. That's half a normal Bonine, so break it in half. This is a good dose to start with. If she starts to feel bad on the water, take another.

One common misconception about Meclazine is that you can take it when you need it on the water. This is not accurate. The drug needs to be in your system for several hours befoe it reaches its peak effectiveness. Also, it can make you drowsy and alcohol consumption will make the drowsiness more pronounced. Taking it the night before eliminates the drowsiness, but the antiemetic effect effect is still present.

If this works, you can buy it at any pharmacy as the generic. They go for about $6.00 per hundred tablets.

Thanks D-Tox & KenK, I went & read up on that wrist band and it seems to get high marks from doctors and some charter captains. Definitely not cheap, but if it will give me a happy first mate, then it will be worth every cent.
