Econfina 2-2-07

Post by Atticus »

Skipped out on work around 11:30 and got out of my suit - put on a hoodie and my PVC boots and hit the road.

Got to the ramp around 1:30 and there wasn't another truck there. :o River was UP with my targeted good tide and all the rain on Thursday afternoon. Dropped the boat and headed out, dodging debris from Thursday's storms.

Wind was a stout WNW and water temp on the flats was around 55. Ran East a good bit and hit a creek that JT showed me this past fall near Rock Island. Trying to get a redfish pattern going for next weekend's tourney.

Moved around prospecting and scored some okay reds up to 20" on a Carolina-rigged pearl Gulp. Water was coffee colored. No luck on my Catch 2000. Lifeflight was buzzing over the marsh - headed to Perry it looked like.

Sun started to go, tide started to leave and I packed it in. Ran back to the river mouth - not another boat - saw a few as specks offshore on the horizon. Ran up the river (with the chopper and the salt marsh, palm stands, it felt like I was going up-river to look for Kurtz)

Put the boat on the trailer at 4:30 - only other activity at the ramp was a guy fishing from the bank. No other trucks or trailers. :o

Made it back to Tallahassee and washed up in time for a retirement party at Silver Slipper. Thats the name of a new spot I found on my Bluechart software.

It was some other guy's retirement party from my wife's office.

Went back out there today 2-3-07 and was SKUNKED. Air temp had dropped 15 degrees, water temp about 1.5 degrees, wind was gale force out of the WNW. Sky was overcast.

Tried a few creeks down and found NOTHING. Marked some rocks and bars for springtime though.

East.

I hit a creek that looked familiar from that day though.

Sunday - St. Marks LH had no water as of about 12:30. Trailered over to the Fort and put-in. Went down river about half way to the LH and fished some oyster bars. (AJ its called Austin's bar and Austin's creek on my GPS) FWC showed up in a bay boat and checked out the situaiton. Everything went well.

Got some short strikes on an Exude soft jerk bait but that was about it. Had to head home for the BBQ and the game. FWC biologist was at the ramp when I pulled the boat out. Just filled out a questionarie and that was it. Lots of FWC in and near the St. Marks River on Sunday.

Looking at tides for Saturday I don't know what will happen. Prolly put in at the Fort and make some long runs (not Econfina) but some long runs. Might change my mind.

Seems the fish won't bite when its overcast and 45-50 degrees out. They acted hungry though at sunny and 60.
