St. Marks River 02/09-10/07

Post by Chalk »

After wherking way too much the past few weeks, I took a much needed day off and spent a day on the pond with my apprentice, Tincan

We launched the Scout and head east to look for a new spot  ..Funny how new spots turn into old spots...We stopped at one spot along the way, only to find several schools of catfish.

We end up at the old reliable stand by spot of this year, not sure what happened to last years spots, they must have passed their expiration dates.

We saw fish, cast to fish, didn't catch fish til the tide was about half way back up. Saw a one eyed sheephead, that was kewl, I was wondering why it was swimming so close to the boat  . After a little fighting, verbal abuse from Tincan and moving around we settled in on a nice bank. We roll up on the goto spot and I lock into a nice 23" red, Tincan fires into the spot and hooks up with a hawg. I release my fish and get the net...Tincan thinks he has this fish whooped, but the wise ol' red has an ace up it's sleeve, in the form of a minn kota trolling motor. A few wraps around the trolling motor and the speculated 30" red swims away with a nice shiny mirrolure :-? .

We ended up catching a few more reds and called it a day. Here is a picture of the first fish of the day, a 27.25" red...note I did take some pictures of Tincan

Day two:

We arrived at Savannah's at 5:00 and had a nice breakfast...To be joined later by Jumptrout51 (accused banana planter), Dawn and Butch. Did I mention the wind was blowing 10-15 out of the north :smt011 and high tide was at 8:30 :smt010 ...After meeting all the tournament participants at Jerry's Bait and Tackle, we headed to the Fort.

Launched the boat and dawned the rain gear, I believe I had 5 layers of clothes on to make the run to the redfish we left yesterday...As we were running the river, I notice a banana on the boat floor...I poke Tincan and say look, he says throw that SOB out the boat

We arrive to find the north wind had blown the water out of the bay we wanted to fish, too shallow, not bait visible, off to plan "B". Fishing the river :smt010 , I'd rather not fish the river, but it was the only option, any other options would of ended up either pushing the boat, tearing it up or both

We ended up fishing the Wakulla river...I got two bites, a 20.5" and 18" redfish...Tincan managed to accost three ladyfish.

The 20.5" redfish was good enough to take first place in the tournament. Loading the boat we were expecting to get our arses handed to us, but I guess everyone else had to fish the same post front, high wind conditions...we only got two bites and one was all it took.

I thoroughly enjoyed the two days on the pond you hardheaded young'n, can't wait til next time.

You two need a room.

Good showing on a bad day. I will admit that I giggled a little when I got up Sat. morning and the wind was howling.

We should have known. Bright and sunny all week. I hook the boat to the truck the day before and it immediately starts to rain. :smt010

Glad you two didn't kill each other. I was a little disappointed not to hear that subwoofer running down the river though.
