Long Day at Econfina

My buddy Beaze and I made the journey down to Econfina Friday night, and after a small battery issue at the ramp got launched about 7:45am Saturday morning. Think I saw some guys from the forum puttin' in as well. Went east and picked up a couple fish early.

A couple more shorties and then Beaze, aka "shirtless wonder" picked up a nice red.

Most all the reds we caught had blue tails. I've heard some different stories, but does anyone know exactly why they get blue sometimes?

Once the tide got low, we headed out to mess around on the flats. Lots of spanish around, got buzzed, caught off and short struck about 50 times. Finally put one in the boat.

Thought I might have the seasons first cobia......but, damn nasty remora instead.

Headed back to the grass around 4pm and started catching reds. I lost a big boy after a hard run and then Beaze hooked up to his twin in the same spot.

Last cast of the day around 5:45 I hooked into a pretty good one.

Worn out with a sore wrist after all that. Great to be on the water, sunny with a cool breeze and non existant waves until late afternoon. Cold beer and fish cleaning capped the evening.

Totals:

15-17 trout with 6 keepers
12-13 reds with 3 keepers, 1 released
1 18" spanish

Great catch.

Their tails are always blue. Sometimes it shows up better when they've been in clearer water. It darkens when they have been in tannin stained water a lot.

good report!! Beats many days I've had.
I have heard several self proclaimed experts on the TV say that the amount and intensity of the Blue is detirmaine by the amount of crab in there diet. Sounds good but I'm not sure how true it is.

I’ve also heard that it’s a Bio-luminosity reaction to their excitement of eating or feeding. Kind of like how a squid changes colors.

Thanks for the tip JT. I wasn't sure how to cook 'em, so I fried the blue tail and ate it first :-D , delicious :lick: I don't always keep reds, but when you drive 10 hrs to go fishing, it's nice to have some fresh eatin' to show for it.

Good looking net. I know a fellow thinks he can do without one.
