Caught a few keepers today among many shorts just West of Grey Mare. 70* water, about 4 feet was the ticket. Shorts came on a straight jig/grub and the keepers seemed to like the soft plastic jerkbait.

Tried a few creeks with no luck. Motored out and attempted another drift but the wind was howling and I wasn't having fun so I headed for the hill - had a party to go to.

Trolled up many spanish too on the way home. Lots of wind. Trolling home was a necessity - got my pecans crushed on the way out the river with the waves. :hammer:

Thanks TC. I think I saw you and your rig on the way down to the pond. I was getting some gas.

It was a bit windy out there yesterday. It did lay down really nice though around 4:00 PM. We got hammered on the way out too, but the ride in was quite nice  .....especially with a cooler of fish!

Howlin' Mad Winds @ St. Marks

Post by Capt Reggie »

 Outstanding seamanship, Atticus...I'm beginning to appreciate the fact none of my crew showed up to go fishing out there yesterday. However rough it was, you know what "they say about a 'bad day of fishing'"! 8) I'll be upset with myself tomorrow, at work, because I didn't go this weekend. :( Maybe I'll go Tuesday (only if I find a partner)? Besides, it's my birthday and I don't work on my birthdays...but, I do play - fish!!! :P

Tried it again on Sunday - I think there was MORE wind. Headed down to the ramp there was a vulture sitting on the powerline with his wings spread looking like he is ready to soar off but his tallons are still clutching that line... "hes not doing that by himself" my friend says - South wind is howling and that vulture is there on plane while holding the wire. :-?

Even the river had a nice chop to it. Choppy 2s on the way out of the river mouth. My partner and I got some good spray on the way out. Trolled around for macks and found 5 good ones. The bite shut down on the troll. We had picked up two short trout trolling and thought - hey - if they will hit a spoon at 5.5 mph - lets try some actual trout baits. Set up a drift East of Grey Mare and boated a 16 and a 19 right away. Pretty good. Looked for some other spots - water was very murky I guess from all the chop. Not a lot of boats out there Sunday and our trout bite shut down.

Wound up near the grass line and the hill when my buddy starts giving me the inspirational pep talk about his favorite spot - just to our West about a mile or two - "no rocks just off the hill so we can run the shoreline there on plane." "You know your insurance covers collission" Well any conversation that includes that line over a cold Natty ends eventually with the following - 300 yards later we find a significant rock right off the hill while on plane and lick our wounds while we look at the remainder of my skeg - what to do now????

We had gotten sawed off right South of a good looking creek so we went in with the trolling motor. Spooked a couple reds and took shots at a few more without luck. IDLED out and took it back to the house.

Anyway the skeg isn't that bad just a character dent and the prop is fine Mrs. Atticus asked if I did that on purpose to try and wreck the prop so I could get that new 4 blade I have been eyeing. Trout were tasty last night and TiVo caught the Martinsville race.

Luke,

I called you on the radio yesterday but never got an answer. I came down with the kids and fished Saturday PM and Sunday AM. We managed a few macks and blues trolling, and then a few trout and catfish but nothing of any size. Man that wind was a PITA.

Sorry about that Chris we turned the VHF off. It was our buddy Lyle providing the navigational safety advice on Sunday.

At least looks like a good excuse for a new skeg guard.
