St. Joseph Bay - 03/31/07

Post by Chalk »

Birddog calls at the beginning of the week and informs me that he is going to be at Mexico Beach this weekend and wants to go fishing. I think, hmmm this sounds good, I'll let him guide me around and I'll fish. Well, he sells his boat sometime after that conversation.

I arrive a Casa Del Vogelhound at 6:30 to find out that Huntn2fish had just left in his boat to fish as well...We arrive at Presnells and HN2F has launched, blocking half the boat basin with his big arse boat  . BD tells me he told HNT2F to head north and there should be some redfish that way. We launch and then proceed to blow by HNT2F in the channel and then hang a left heading south. We run around Black's Island and have you ever had this feeling like your being watched   ...HNT2F was on my six :o

We start fishing, fighting the wind and wishing the sun would come out. I quickly catch 4-5 trout, one being 21"...we pretty much stayed with this pattern all day with exception of Birddog got the hot stick and started wearing me out cause I'm too hard headed to change from what was working for me earlier. We ended up catching 20-25 trout, several over 20"....Easily figured we had a 16 lb 5 fish stringer..all the fish were 18 to 19 7/8 and fat.

While we are trout fishing we ran over some reds...so when we got on solid grass we would look for reds. We drifted onto a flat that had two lone holes in the middle, isolated from anything else....We are drifting towards the holes and I say, "If we don't catch one out of those holes, we might as well put it on the trailer." I fire to the left side of the hole and BD fires onto the right side....I run through the hole and don't get a hit....BD rears back, his eyes get big and I see yellow running down his leg :o  ...He yells, "Gggggggetttttt thhhheeee neeeetttttt!" I see this large silver and speckled missile raising cane out in front of the boat....BD plays the fish from the poling platform. He gets her close to the boat and I get her in the net. She measures out to 27" and weighs 6 lbs on the Boga. We take some pictures and release her to go back and make some more babies. Mighty fine fish BD, glad I was there to witness it.

Redfish were hard to pattern, though we figured out they were on the shallow flats in singles or small & large schools...We saw one school of 30 and they were all nice upper slot fish...We ended up catching 7 or so, one over 27".

Another awesome day on the mighty Gulf of Mexico, great fellowship and fine fishing, can't wait til next time.
