3/30-4/1 Econfina Report

Post by volguy »

wife and i take a birthday trip each year b/c our birthdays are so close together. so it was back down to the BIG ECON because work kept us busy the last few weeks and everything was booked from here to puerto rico. we had a bunch of folks coming in this weekend to stay with my friends that live down there. so it was a big party all weekend.

once again the redfish were on fire and we ended up with around 60 for three days and not fishing near as long as i usually stay out. the trout are still VERY scattered and you could probably ink out a limit, but you would have to work you butt off for it.....especially with the gail forced winds we had saturday and sunday.

Friday we were out around noon since the tide was very low in the morning b/c the wind was helping push the tide way lower than predicted. i was able to run to my trout hole that has produced well and we started catching right away. First fish was a nice 22.5 inch trout.

fished for another two hours and ended up with seven keepers and lost five other nice fish (smallest was 17 inches). headed for some redfish and ended up with 26 for the day. mostly small rats but we did have several that were 23 to 24 inches. several of the larger fish were light colored signaling that the first wave of big reds from the deeper water are coming in. wanted to take more pictures of my favorite fishing buddy (other than my dad of course in case he reads this :D), but she was in the sunning mood and didn't feel compelled to smile for the camera too often in her bathing suit.

saturday was the same except for a 20 mph wind out of the south all day making for some very nice 3-4 footers rolling in. i was not able to get to my good trout hole and fishing was hard for trout in other areas because the fish are so scattered you need to move a lot and every time you would move you would get a little wet from all the chop. we did end up with 8 nice trout however. i had sat the boat down for the first drift and second cast with a rattle trap yielded this fine specimen.

Image

25.5 inches and 5lbs 2oz mogan trout. man i was pumped. that is my biggest yet and she was a true sow. i usually let them go over 20 inches just b/c they aren't as good to eat when they get that big, but i kept this one to show her off and get some really big filets out of.
started fishing for reds and had another great day. first place we stopped yielded 10 redfish on 11 cast. my wife had caught a few reds and she says "i think i have an oyster". they she says, "wait a minute, it is pulling back". got it up and it was a nice flounder you see in the cooler shot below. i was laughing so hard. i just didn't want her to loose it cause they come unbuttoned so easy. but this one had swallowed that gulp deep since she was just dragging it along. hahahaha the quality of the reds went up tremendously b/c the bigger fish finally moved in and almost all of our fish were 20-24 inches with one that was 25.5 inches. i wanted more pics, but the wind was so bad i didn't have time to take my foot of the trolling motor. here are a few however. man it was a fun day. we had five boat fulls out and everyone had a limit of reds and a few trout were also caught.

these are pics of our first two days worth of fish.

sunday was another windy one. blowing hard all day. trout were non existent for us and another boat full of guys and gals that were out. we ended up with 14 reds in about 1.5 hours of fishing and they were all 23-24 inches except for two rats. after that we were too tired to catch any more and both our wrists looked like oranges from all the catching and pulling.

another great weekend of fishing on the econfina. now it is stripers, spots on lanier and crappie for a few weeks til the next trip. hope you guys enjoy the report.

Good job, I know some folks who would love to have that "kicker" trout any time

fishery

Post by volguy »

the redfish comeback is really turning out to be quite the conservation story. i still can't believe we can go down and catch the numbers of fish we have been catching. the conservation and control that has been placed on the fishery all over florida is really starting to show. several years back, you would never hear of a redfish being caught down in the ten thousand islands or the keys. now many of the guides are being asked to just target redfish on some of their trips in that extreme south florida area. a great success story.

trout hole

Post by volguy »

rocket,
that is a good idea sharing my trout hole. i wouldn't want it to get overfished if we were fishing the same one.

to get to my trout hole, you go out the mouth of the river, hang a slight southwest heading, go approximately 10.99 miles, turn hard left and go 4.23 miles and then due south 21.2 miles and that should put you dead on it. :-D while you are there, you might find a few grouper, but the only way to catch them is on a kite rig with a zara spook underneath. :o just please don't catch them all. now where is your trout hole?
