Moon/Sun rise/set times and effect on tides.

Post by Just Fish »

Maybe this is a dumb question but here goes....

Is there a calculation I can use to determine tides based on Sun/Moon rise and set? I know that is a weird question as it's very easy to look up the tide info but here is why I ask...

I am comparing the Garmin 76cx and Lowrance H20c and notice that the Garmin has tide charts on it but the Lowrance only has Sun/Moon rise/set. So I am wondering if I can semi-acurately calculate the tides based on the Sun/Moon rise set info.

Thanks

Short answer no. You can "predict" tides based on date/time, but the math hurts my head.

My advice, go with the garmin.

Thanks for the info Tom, I just have to decide if its worth the extra $150 just for some automatic tide charts that I can easily look up the night prior to the trip.

Why not just buy the nauticpath chip for under 100 bux. I got one and it has the tides on it. From the Lowrance site, it is compatible with the H2OC.

Go with GARMIN,tides are always there, plus it shows you how much the tide is rising or falling on the graph. You get the sun/moon stuff as a bonus.

Thanks Dubble, that's what I wanted to hear. I was planning on getting the nauticpath chip anyway. I didn't realize it included the tide charts. Thanks for the tip.
