Need a PENN pal
I bought a penn 209 levelwind from a pawn shop today for $20. (unsure on make of rod). The reel is used but seems to be in good cosmetic condition. The question is does it have a anti-reverse. When I click it up from the cast postion the reel handle reverses when you pull the line. I looked for a switch but couldn't find one. Also, when it is in casting postion the line doesnt unspool easily. I put a 3oz egg on the end of it and it just dangles. Is this reel repairable at a decent price. Can I do it myself.;
gdaddy, if the spool tension is not adjusted down, the reel should turn freely when you throw the lever to the cast position. There is no lever for the anti-reverse. There is an anti-reverse dog in the reel that should be functional whenever the spool is engaged. I would ask 1 more question. Is the levelwind working? I recently learned the problems with Penn levelwind reels. From what you're describing, the reel could need nothing more than a good servicing. The anti-reverse dog goes on one of the screws that holds the main plate in the reel. There is a small coil spring that keeps the dog under pressure, and engaged in the anti-reverse gear. If the spring has fallen out of position, the dog might not be engaging. If the dog is broken, the dog and spring cost about $2. Go online to the Penn Reel website and download the schematic for the reel. That will help a lot. If it isn't too corroded up, it's worth fixing. You'll know when tou try to take the side plate screws out. If the reel is badly corroded, they probably won't come out, and the reel is not worth fixing.
What was I supposed to do today?
