Trolling for Grouper with Mann 20,25, or 30
I was wondering what kind of Rod, Reel, Line, and Terminal Tackle I should use?

Mojokoko,
I like to use the following tackle for trolling stretches.
* 7' foot medium to med-heavy action trolling rod, however, any of your grouper/snapper rods could work.
* Shimano Torium 20 reel, but the TLD's work well, and again any of your grouper reels will work.
* Braid is the best line since the thin diamter allows the lure to troll deeper and it pulls the grouper out of the hole better. I prefer 50lb PP. If using mono I would not go any heavier than 30lb. If you troll PP and 30 lb mono side by side you will notice a distinct difference in the angle of the line entering the water indicating the PP is getting deeper.
* I use 6'-8' of 80-lb mono for the leader and tie to a 150lb swivel. Palomar knot to the swivel (mono side) and uni to the lure. My main line has a 150lb snap swivel tied with a uni.[/list]
I usually troll at 3.5-4.0 knots (measured by the GPS). Locate some hard bottom and have at it. Keep an eye on the depth finder as this is the best way I've found to locate new honey holes. Good luck.

I use heavy duty trolling rods with 3/0 Penns....Line has been both braid and mono although I like the braid the best..got 65 PP on one of them.. This afternoon I took some line off a Penn 9500 I keep in the boat all the time and put it on the trolling rod that had 30# mono on it..It was 40 # test..Had overloaded the spinning reel and was just asking for a wind knot...
I measured 175 ft of the 40 PP and put it over the mono on the trolling reel...Make it easier to judge how much line I have out..I've yet to find anything that will leave a permanent mark on braid...Tried paint, markers, ect...
These outfits have worked good for me the past three years...just need to find some grouper...
Trolled about two hours last Thurs out of ST Marks and hung one fish that I lost...Did mark quite a few fish over structure I had fished before..they just weren't hitting..

GROUPA TROLLEN
150 - 200 YDS 25-30LB MONO SPLICED TO 150 YARD 18/80 BRAID, 150 lb swivel, 6' -50 lb flouro carbon leader.
I HAVE TRIED THE 30 AND 65 LB BRAID AND THEY JUST SEEM TO BRAKE TO EASY. THESE SIZES ARE PLENTY STRONG, THE PROBLEM IS THAT THEY ARE SO THIN THEY GET NICKED EASILY FROM TANGLED TROLLING LINES. I HAVE ALSO HAD THE SWIVELS RUB THROUGH THE LINE.
