Windy Tuesday!
Took my Father and a good friend fishing yesterday. Got down to Econfina around 2:00 hoping there would be some water in the river to run out. I was affraid the north wind would keep the water out of the river and was glad to see there was enough to launch my boat. Man, the wind was blowing a constant 15-25mph as we idled out!!
At our first stop/drift, I gave the guys spinning rods with CT under 1/4oz jigs and gulp. It was hard for them to get the hang of casting in all the wind but they finally figured it out. I took my baitcaster and started throwing a chartreuse colored Catch 2000 and hooked a good fish (19 inch) on the second cast. Three more casts later, 17 inch trout in the boat. Now the guys are looking at me like they want a Catch 2000 to fish with. I tell them to stick with what they have as it will generally out fish anything! True to my words, Big Tim hooks and lands a 23 inch trout and we are off and running! Later I cast over a sandy spot and watch a nice cobia come up behind and nail my Catch 2000 and we are off to the races. 10 min later I scoop up a nice 29 in cobia and made him promise to come back to the same spot next year when he is legal! Well at least I tried!!
For some reason the fish turned off for about and hour around 4:00. But believe me, they later turned on with a Vengeance! I have never caught 15 keepers that were consistently that large and only one small trout. Can you believe that, only one 13 inch throw back!! We finished up around 6:30 and headed to a creek to look for some reds! It did not take Tim long to put a nice 24 inch red in the boat as we had reds tailing up along the shore line. Later he put another 22 inch red in the boat on Gulp Jerk Shad and 1/8 oz jig head, and that was enough! They wanted to go home! Got the boat on the trailer while being eaten alive by the No-See-Ems and headed home to Thomasville. By the time the boat was cleaned and fish on ice it was close to 10:00! Long day but man was that fun! I saw only one other boat on the water today!! I guess I can thank the wind for that!!!
