Do you guys run the gas out?

Post by bman »

At the end of the day I flush the motor with fresh water.
And then I run all the gas out.
We have always done that with our two strokes.

But a friend with a 4 stroke never does...

We have a 4-stroke Nissan now.
It takes forever to run the gas out and then you have to re-prime.
We run it at least every other week- Hopefully more often than that :D

The fuel line is attached and clamped to the fuel pump on both of my outboards. That's the factory setup. One is a 2 stroke, the other is a 4 stroke. The only way to run the fuel out is to remove the cowling, loosen the clamp, and pull the fuel line loose from the pump. I've never done it, and have had no problems.
What was I supposed to do today?

Personally, I do not but my FIL does it religuosly and we have the reprime it the next morning. As high as gas is getting I don't want to waste too much.

Never, but mine doesn't set any longer than two weeks and usually only one week :-D if it was going to set for longer than a month, I would probably consider running it out

Never run it out, never had a problem, even in winter....I crank it up about once a month for a few minutes to run it and wet the impeller...

The boat does sit inside a building in winter....that helps.

Oh, 2 stroke Mercury Saltwater......

One other thing, IF you premix fuel and run multiple carbs, do not run it out. If one carb runs out first, you have no lubrication to that cylinder......

If you aren't going to run it out, you need to be sure you have your fuel stabilized. Otherwise, over time, the gas in your carb will turn to varnish and then you will have to feed the mechanic :o

Was told when you run it out you leave a little behind that will dry up faster and gum up the carb quicker only time I have had trouble it sat six months w/o stabil. Buy some and use it.
Yesterday it was taboo today it is normal what the heck will they be doing tomorrow?

The only time I ever ran the gas out was an accident about 12 miles from the truck. Hope like hell that doesnt happen again!!!!

I've seen a couple of motors do this.

One day ya' go fishin'...cruisin' along and POW.
"What was that noise? We just lost power."
Shut 'er down and pull the cover off.
"I don't think that hole in the top cyclinder is supposed to be there...at least it wasn't there this morning."
"Yeah, and I don't think that piston rod is supposed to be broken off and stickin' out like that."

It's always the top cylinder.
If you haven't run far you can idle back. The motor's already beyond a JB Weld repair anyway.

I run my fuel out of my 2-stroke if it is going to sit for more than a week, my dad does the same with his 2-stroke merc. The oil that mixes with the gas is what makes 2-strokes carbs gum up faster. I Have also found that higher quality oils are less likely to gum your stuff up. I personally use Torco oil's in everything I own. http://www.torco.com
