checking fluid in trim/tilt?

checking fluid in trim/tilt?
My trim is making noise and I want to check the fluid level. It has just one rod that supports the motor and connects to the trim unit. Where do I add fluid or maybe drain any air that maybe in the cylinder? It is on a 1988 johnson 50 vro.
