Blind hog at St Joe 6-9

Post by bman »

Had a good friend come in from Atlanta to fish today.
I was going to put him on my trout pattern at Panacea but with the TFC going on I thought it would be better to look elsewhere.

We decided to go to St Joe- My first trip over there this year.
Stopped in Presnell's to launch and pick up some bait.
Nice folks... You can tell Jonathan and his dad were excited!
Image

We ran out - The dads in the Yoders boat and Jonathan and I in the Bevis Boat.
Image
There was a light chop and it was high tide so we went looking for a red in close.
I hooked up on top water but right at the boat the beast ran under the boat and the line caught on a bolt holding a rod holder on...
I talked to my self for a while... :smt013

A little later Jonathan put the first fish in the boat- I use Fish lightly...

So the dads were catching short trout and lady fish. The sons were caching ladys and short trout.

Jonathan and I set up a drift near Blacks Island and a few moments later a boat runs up into our drift. I'm a little upset but think-
I'm not movin...
Just then I think - that grass bed looks red. Wait that Grass bed is moving.
The guy in the other boat shouts Reds about the same time my brain thinks it.
I cast in a school of 50 -100 and bam...
Image
Just under the legal limit...
We regroup and circle back- Jonathan with a nice one on...
Image
Look at the smile on his face- You can't do this in Atlanta.
Why do people live there???
We had several other break offs.

After a few reds I got Mr Yoder in the boat and tried to locate the school again- they were gone.

Here is one of several story times at the boat. We had a lot of fun with each other.

Here is the day's haul- one keeper trout, Mr Yoders
Three keeper Reds- One is Jonathan's the other... :D

We caught fish on Gulps and Topwater.
I have never seen a big school of reds like that. It could get to be a new obsession!
I felt a little bad for the other couple of boats trying to work the school.
I had no idea what I was doing on a big school like that- the other boats had done it before and I tried to take cues from them.
Everyone was catching fish. I'll do better next time guys.

By the way, this is what defeat looks like..

 Outstanding trip, men! Guess what? It really makes no difference if you are lucky or good...just as long as the fish get caught (they don't know) - something about that "blind hog finds an acorn every once in awhile"!
