Trolling Motor Problems?

I have a 54# thrust motor guide trolling motor. My boat is a 17' key west. The plug for the trolling motor heats up almost to melting when under load for awhile. I just bought the boat in February and its my first real boat. Any suggestions on what may be the problem. I ran the motor in a 55 gallon bucket when I got home and checked the amp draw on the motor which is fine, just wonderin when under full load is when I have the problem. Maybe to small of a trolling motor? Checke the wiring size and it is #6 which the installation manual calls for. Any help would be appriciated.

What size connector/plug?

I melted a plug on mine...went with this setup with the 6 gauge adapter to the right and no problems since then.

I would say that out on the water the vibration from the higher load is causing a loose connection to arc in the plug.

I was thinking the same about a loose connection. I have since replaced the plug and made sure saturday when using it I pushed it all the way end. Had no problems with itsaturday but only used it once or twice for a minute or two and not as aggresiive as I did the other time. Thanks for the advice Tom. Chalk that looks like a nice connector that locks in too place. I may have to get one soon. The problem is they left no slack in the wires on the back side of the female plug in the boat where the wires run back to the battery. What a bummer.

I have the same plug that chalk uses. I have not had any problems out of that plug, like I did with the standard plugs. They cost about double of the normal ones, but a lot better
