NEW WATERS

Post by CROCKER »

HAD THE CHANCE TO GO POND FISHING THE OTHER MORNING. WE CAUGHT MAYBE 20+ BASS AND ABOUT 15 BREAM. MOST OF THE BASS WERE ABOUT 1 LB BUT BONECRACKER DID MANAGE A 5 AND 10 LBer (WHICH MADE FOR A LONG RIDE HOME.) I KEPT TELLING HIM A 1 LB BASS ON A 4 WT FLY ROD WAS MUCH MORE FUN. I KEEP TRYING TO CATCH SOME OF THE SPECKS IN THIS POND TO NO AVAIL, BUT I HAVE SEEN SOME BREAK WATER (THEY BIG). I HAVE TRIED JIGS, SMALL RAPALAS, AND MY ALL TIME BEST FLY ( BLACK SINKING BUG WITH WHITE LEGS) WITH NO LUCK.

ANY SUGGESTIONS FOR SPECK FLIES.

MY FLY TYING ABILITIES AINT THAT GREAT BUT I AM WORKING ON A PROTO TYPE OF A SMALL MINNOW TO CATCH SPECKS.

speck fly

Post by Terrier »

I've only caught a few specks on the fly - a jansens minnow and a puglisi pinfish (small 2" version): Anything that looks like a minnow. Also, you may want to invest in a sink tip line - I caught the specks deep, but this was Lake Hall which goes down to 35', so if the waters you fish are shallow, you may not need the sink tip.
