Keys Trip

Post by ak man »

This isn't a big bend report, but in the cold winter I figured someone would enjoy looking at it. 3 buddies and myself planned a trip down to the keys for the 22nd thru 27th of Jan. We stayed in Marathon at a campsite with its own boat slip. We rented a 24ft Mako from Capt. Pips that turned out to be a really nice boat with a 250 4-stoke yamaha with 11 hrs on it. We had the boat for 4 days, only really caught any good fish on one of the days. Catching bait was really tough and going to a new place and doing it all on your own is not easy. On Thursday, with a well full of pilchards we did pretty well, catching a small blackfin tuna and a bunch of nice kings. Kingfish aren't a really prized fish, but they were a trip savor for sure, and on 20lb spinning outfits they were a lot of fun. It was a learning experience for sure, and even though the 12 hr drive was pretty tough, it was worth it to get some 80 degree beer drinkin' days in.
