Aucilla 2-09-08 -

Snatch and I launched at the Aucilla ramp (right behind Welby and Skeeter) around 6:45 a.m. We had a damn good game plan if I don't say so myself. We planned on going in shallow to hit a couple bars before the tide fell out. Once the tide fell out, we planned on leaving our boat and wading (yes, we brought waders) up in some creeks in hopes that some of the good reds had stayed up in the deeper holes of the creeks. It sounded like a great plan...however, you might want to think about a couple things before you do something like this: 1) Buy some waders that fit your feet...mine were inevitably too big and oversized waders mixed with soft gooey mud don't work too well. Every step becomes an adventure and it sure is fun having your foot come out of your boot every step. The rod does work well as a walking stick though. Snatch's waders had a hole in them and he had water up to his crotch before we'd walked a hundred years.

Anyways, we went in to BH Bar and immediately saw reds tailing...unfortunately, they were on the wrong side of the bar. On the way around the bar, I caught a decent trout on a jig. Things were looking up. On the backside of the bar around 7:10, Snatch hooks a good one on the spoon. It measured right at 23.5" and weighed a little over 4 lbs.

Good fish and start to the day. Not a tourney winner, but surely with a start like that we'd slay 'em. Not so fast, my friend.

Snatch then sticks a nice trout on the Reel Slow Secret.

We continue to fish up to the grass line and the tide falls out some more. We debate on whether to scrap the original plan and ride the tide out or to leave the boat (where it will soon be mud) and throw on the waders. Waders it was. We put the waders on and walked up into one of my favorite creeks. Getting through the soft mud to the bar at the mouth was an ordeal and we were both drenched in sweat when we got to ground we could walk on. We wade our way into the creek and see absolutely no signs of life. In total we waded about 1/2 mile - 1 mile up in the creek and found some good holes and bottom, but no bait and fish. By the time we got back out of the creek, it was about 10:30. The boat was sitting high and dry in mud. Nice. Not wanting any part of the soft mud we'd slogged our way through, we just had to sit in the boat and b.s. for an hour until we had enough water under the boat to push it out.

11:30 and we finally get to fish again. Head even further East hoping the water would come in. Pat threw the spoon and I threw a gold twitchbait. FInally about 1 p.m. a decent red inhales the twitchbait at the boat. Land him and he's right at 22"...once again a good eating fish, but not a money winner.

Continue fishing East hoping to get into a creek I hit up last Saturday. Lots of mullet, no water. It sure did take a long time to come in today. Saw a couple reds, but couldn't get them to bite. Packed it up around 2:40 and ran back to the hill. It was still a good day on the water with a good buddy.

Note for personal records and so I can reset the pitch counters:
