gps not showing installed waypoints correctly

Post by slayer »

With my new handy dandy Garmin 76 gps.....i would go to sites like keatonbeachmarina.com and get the GPS coordinates for things like the channel markers and birdracks and rock island and all the surrounding waypoints...I would enter them manually or use software such as easygps and then download them into my unit....problem is that they are never right!!!!! I actually would have to delete them and just create a waypoint when I was near someplace such as a channel marker.... :why: :why: :why: if I have a good eye, I can usually spot things such as the birdracks or the marker at the inlet of spring warrior....with all of the waypoints being off, i just figured it wat the format that I was using to install them

what "datum" format should I be using ?????? any ideas ??????

How far off are they? Like nowhere close, or within a few hundred yards or what?

yeah...it could go either way

Not to derail: I would be sure the location format of the GPS is the same as the Numbers you have.

Sounds like you may be using the wrong format.

There are two common ways to display.

One is degrees, minutes, seconds. The other is degrees, minutes.

And there is a BIG difference.

This is how degrees, minutes ,seconds will display:

(note: I use * for the degree sign)

83* 25' 10" (83 degrees, 25 minutes, 10 seconds)

This is how degrees, minutes will display:

83* 25.100' (83 degrees, 25.100 minutes)

These 2 coordinates are NOT the same. You must know which format you use, and not mix them. (Or you may hit something :smt010 )

Some GPS's will even use another decimal place, so be sure you have it set to the same format you are using to input the numbers.

Look to see what format you are using and then use this website to convert your numbers http://www.csgnetwork.com/gpscoordconv.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Another way is to change the format on your GPS to match the numbers you have. Input the numbers, then change back or leave at the format.

Some of the numbers shown like this

2958.00 08350.00

which are the format you are using EXCEPT they are missing the 3rd decimal position which will throw you off several hundred feet.

Looks like you have some bumb numbers. Some of them are correct ... THE CRANE 2938.765 08352.889 is correct because it has the 3rd number after the decimal.

Do you have the Mapsource software? If not you need to get it. Here are some of the numbers you are looking for in the correct format

ADAMS BEACH N29 52.763 W83 38.589
MARKER 1 KEATON BEACH N29 48.839 W83 37.738
KEATON BEACH N29 49.096 W83 35.585
SPRING WARRIOR CREEK N29 55.327 W83 41.219
BIG GRASS ISLAND N29 44.296 W83 34.265
ROCK ISLANDS N29 58.383 W83 49.719
FENHOLLOWAY RIVER N29 58.572 W83 47.296
THE CRACK N29 23.819 W83 42.722
SUPERLEDGE N29 22.817 W83 45.675
BUCKEYE REEF N29 39.003 W83 54.245
DOGS HEAD CENTER N29 45.219 W83 37.425
N. STEINHATCHEE #1 BUOY N29 39.383 W83 27.376
