Rock Island

Post by High Hope »

Went out of the Econfina with neighbors Wes & Ron about 3pm. Fished around Rock Island and we caught several Reds, kept 2, and 5 trout ( kept 2). Jigs and grubs. Grubs= Gambler rootbeer and gulp camo. This was the first time I ever fished around Rock Island, neat place. There were some Kayak campers on the island, and they were paddling around exploring the island. Well they paddled with in casting distance of our drift chasing the reds out  . They did not have a clue. Then two guys motored up to us and asked if we wanted a Red. It was the only fish they had and we said sure, not wanting to waste a fish. They dropped it in the net and I brought it in the boat. They departed for Fenhalloway. I said to Wes it looks short. We measured it at 16". The fish was still alive and we released it. Takes all kinds. Started to cloud up and looked like rain and we headed for Econfina, and home. Rained on the way in. First fishing since November steelhead on Lake Erie.

Rock Islands are a neat place to fish. There isn't many places in florida where you can see an Island with a rocky shoreline. I lived/guided in Alaska a couple of Summers ago, and after returning back I made my first trip to the Islands. They reminded me of the Alaska shoreline, down scaled of course. That is unfortunate that folks fish without knowing the slots. Sounds like you had a good day, minus the rain.
