This is the recipe I use for leaders. I typically tie 7.5' - 9' leaders. The website was stolen from Chalk or Reel Slow.

Usually no more than 6-8 inches of shock/bite tippet for reds. If I was fishing docks, pilings, buoys etc......I'd probably go up some to maybe 12" or so, and shorten up on the overall leader length. I use the tapered one piece leaders. Have used the Orvis, Rio, Frog hair, and SA. really like the Rio.

I do not use a shock tippet...have not found a reason to use one....12lb tippet has worked for all my fly and conventional fishing needs...I do use a 20 lb tippet on my topwater rod, but that is more to control me and not the fish.

If I was fishing for toothy fish or larger fish like a tarpon or bull reds, then I would use one.

I use the leader formula on the website that Birddog posted. I also make my own furled leaders, they are nine foot long and I add a 12 lb tippet about 2 ft long. Most of my leaders are 9 to 12 ft long.

I use a pre-fab tapered 12lb leader and 16 to 24" of 20lb fluoro. Leader length is situational. If the fish are real skinny and the wind is down, I will fish a long leader (as long as 14 feet).
