CATCHIN at St. Marks 04/13/2008

Post by mjsigns »

Put the boat in at the lighthouse around 7:00am Saturday morning wind howling at us. We (and the whole family) were met with harsh winds out of the south. I knew it was going to be one of those days when the ride down to the fishing spot would be a hard butt busting ride. Sure enough once we came out of the lighthouse canal it was really windy, it felt like 15-20 on stead of the 10-15 NOAA had predicted. There were some immense clouds to the west of the river south that were headed north. We finally stopped down past the rock garden beaten and soaked. The kids complained it was too cold and windy to catch fish. We as parents had given ample warning about what to wear, however they were teenagers now and had decided not to heed our advice concerning wardrobe issues and weather conditions. Me and my wife ended up with all the keepers. I lost at least three “BIG” Trout at the side of the boat. The catch of the day was a Cobia caught by my wife. She was afraid to hold it because he was still green, so my daughter stepped up to the task:

At 12:30 storm clouds filled the western skies so we headed back to the lighthouse and took another beating and tailored the boat just before the bottom fell out. Got a free wash down on the way home.

End of day Tally:

40-50 trout kept 8
1 cobia
4 flatheads

We went Friday to Aucilla River and did about the same as you...but rough as a cob....almost too rough. Caught a cobia just about the size as your's too. What a fight on light tackle. There back. :D

Today I am really feeling the after effects of the butt busting bone jarring ride to and from the fishing spot. Lower Back is sore & stiff, both knees sore (I was standing most of the ride).

That Cobia was a bit green when he came into the boat. He literally swam to the boat and my wife just horsed him over the gunnel. Of course he exploded once he realized he was boated, but not for long. I caught the picture just seconds before he exploded out of her hands and back to the ocean.

If I would have brought the landing net we could have easily hauled in a 4-man limit. But thank goodnes, I didn't feel like cleaning 20 trout...
