Oyster Bars and Jetty in Front of Lighthouse
New to the forum but have read it for a few years now. I was out fishing in front of the lighthouse a few weeks ago and noticed an oyster bar that started about 20 yards from shore and ran out pretty far. I could not tell how far it ran out though and was scared to death to run anywhere near it in fear of ripping off the foot of my motor. Also, how far out does the jetty run out from the boat ramp channel before you can cut it back east? I am looking for any navagation advice near the lighthouse and to the west of it. Any other bars that I should be aware of? Thanks!

There used to be a white PVC pipe sticking up out of the water at the end of it. Should still be there. The big rocks start just past Stoney Bayou, but one time I hit a cinder block in that area someone used for and anchor. Until you know where you can run play it safe and run on the outside of the stake line poles and ease in from there. Don't know what type of boat you have but watch the tides when running close to shore. Sometimes it looks deep enough and the next thing you know it may only be a foot or so deep and your skeg is dragging the grass beds.

Run between the bar and shore then around the old dock pilings and go East on a half tide to a high tide. No more bars or rocks for 3 miles.(I don't think)?

Either wade or fish from a yak at least then when you hit something it won't hurt as bad.

Oyster bar runs almost all the way to channel marker 10 in a bit of a dogleg pattern. BNetween the end of it and marker 10 is a spoil area so call it all the way to 10. It comes up maybe 6" to 12" less as of about half way down, but you can rip in to it when you cant see it sometimes because there are decptive rip currents and eddies caused by it and the channel that aren't really visible, and make the water murky as well. I almost always take the channel around it because it's not that far, but that channel route around it is often some of the roughest water in the area if the wind and tide are opposing. If it's deep enough to get over the grass/mud near the lighthouse parking lot, then the short path is to take the route already mentioned - depends on the tide and your boat really.topwater11 wrote:New to the forum but have read it for a few years now. The jettie goes maybe 2/3 of the way to the marked hazard just before channel markers 11 (lighted green) and 12 (nun). It turns slightly and gets deeper before it ends. MY best advice if you're not worried about rough water conditions at the end of the jettie or oyster bar is, come out the mouth of the pool, give yourself 25-30 feet of clearance from the jetties, and run out pretty much directly at marker 11. Somewhere in the area of marker 12 are two small oyster bars and some spoils. They are present on some Navionics maps but not on Garmin BlueChart. Heading toward marker 11, it should line up almost in the dead center between marker 12 and the wreck/hazard kind of like a gun sight - then you are good to go.
