Cobia baits?

Post by WaltDawg »

I'm taking old silver out this weekend instead of the yak. Just in case I run into some Cobia, anybody have a suggestion on what they've been eating? It looks like they don't really care what bait you got. Thanks in advance for any advice.

ANY live baitfish... over last year have had them hit pins, grunts, porgies, and this past week even a lizardfish!!! :smt107 If they are cruising around and hungry they'll take a live bait right quick like. Have also caught a good many on dead cigar minnows offshore while trying to catch grouper.

Now, what's really interesting to me is that when I've cleaned cobia, far and away crabs are my most common find in their stomachs. Occasional fish, but at about a 10 crab to 1 fish ratio, so if you can get your hands on some crabs I bet they'll payoff too.

Live baitfish of any kind just about even small ladyfish and mackerel. Crabs should work (BBG has done the homework on that one, I have seen the half digested crabs he is talking about). The more difficult to find bait but maybe the best of all would be live eels. Cobia love them. Jumbo live shrimp have worked too.

They will hit a jig or a good fly if you pick the right one.

Good luck.

I had a feeling Sharkman would suggest a fly!

I was reading recently that Cobia rarely resist a wounded crab. I was debating whether or not to catch some live bait before I went out. I was thinking about taking my breambuster to get some pinfish if I couldn't get any other live bait. A lot of good advice.

It is a nice pick me up while I'm watching the bulldog massacre.

Gulp(Berkley, I know, maybe not GULP) has a 5 inch blue crab that is the bomb for Cobes. Hook a large circle hook in the small crab side and have at it!!
