Talltails called me up for a little on the water scouting trip in some hard south winds. We journeyed out to continue our goal of landing a Tarpon. Talltails caught us a few pinfish, and mullet. We headed out and as soon as we dropped anchor, one lone Tarpon greeted us within a few feet of the boat. Just enough to inspire us to stay there the rest of the afternoon. We saw a big Ray jump out of the water, landed a gar, lots of sharks, gafftops, and had a lot of fun fighting big UFO's. Unidentified Fishing Objects. We THINK Talltails had a really nice Tarpon on, it did a short dance as it turned hard left, and broke the leader a few minutes later. I really think his was a Tarpon from the initial strike and the short dance. I had a few breakoffs on the 60 lb leader that were definitely sharks. Definitely sharks! Talltails did hook one small Cobia. All it all it was a fun afternoon on the water and TONS better than sitting on the couch.
We are free lining on one rod or two and Cork with a short 3-6 ft freeline under it. Nothing more fun than watching one circle that Mullet on its side swimming on top. Then there is a huge splash.
Hey jsuber I will be at shellpoint the middle of July. I have never fished it. I have fished Clearwater and some of Tampa bay. There we pitched docks for redfish, trout and sheephead on light spinning gear. I like to target all fish. Any advice on where I should start. I have a 17 ft low profile boat and I'm not to sure about big water.
