Keaton Beach 7/19; Rough Start, Decent Finish
Got off work Friday and loaded up my daughter and one of her friends for a weekend at Keaton. It's been a while since she's been fishing and had the itch, and wanted to give scalloping a try. Get to the camper about 7:00 Fri evening and begin to prep tackle. Was pulling a jig head to hook onto a guide and my rod broke. Thought, O.K., maybe a little too much pressure and not enough drag.
Then moments later realized another rod had the top guide missing. O.K. down two poles.
Finished prepping and had a
. Started fishing shallow Sat morning and on the second cast with my brand new Catch 2000, I hear "snap," and thought my line broke. Looked up and another rod broke, between the first and second guides.
Now I'm wondering what in the world is going on. Water was moving out, so we left with it. Moved to deeper water (10') and it was a rough ride out in the aluminum boat. Not soon after arriving, my daughter's friend informed me she was not feeling well (seasick). My daughter was keeping quiet, but I noticed was moving slowly....she fessed up.....both felt bad. It was only 10:30 and they were ready to pack it in...my daughter's friend said she felt like she was going to toss her cookies. Things just weren't going right at this point. My daughter has never been sick before and sticks out long days on the water with me. So I take them in shallow and kick 'em out of the boat. Thought getting some cool water on them while they are able to stand would help. It did. Let 'em scallop for a little bit before we gave the incoming tide another try, this time in shallower water. Picked up 2 keeper trout, then decided to let them have some more fun scalloping. Picked up about 5 gallons. Daughter helped clean the entire bucket. She caught on quick and kept up one for one with me. All-in-all a good day on the water.

Pirate, the rod that had the missing top guide has had that happen before, so I wasn't totally surprised. The two rods that broke were the red Challengers, TGX series. I thought maybe I had the drag too tight on the first break when hooking the jig head, but when the second one broke while casting the following day, I began to wonder. Don't want to seem like I'm being critical of these rods, because I've been happy with them so far, and it could have simply been me. I'm going to contact Cairo Trout to see if they've had any problems like this.Flint River Pirate wrote:Good report Ron, what was the deal with your rods?

Thanks Heath. I'll give you a holler tomorrow. These have been good rods and I've got to take responsibility for the first rod breaking. As usual, you and South Georgia Outdoors are first class.

Sounds like fun even with the seasick girls and broken rods. You made the best of it.
