Keaton Beach 8/9/08

Post by Breambuster »

Buddy boating with Ddb for some fishing and scalloping on Saturday with the family and a couple of co-workers on board. We did well on both compartments, limiting out on scallop (thanks to Ddb for finding the mother load) as well as coming home with a mix bag of fish (more later).

The day started on a good note when I ran into a school of porgy as soon as I idle past the marina. Two well placed cast with my 7' net gave us enough bait for the day. I decided to make one more cast when the bait school came up again and we had enough bait for Ddb as well. Meet up with Ddb and we started the day in the general area we did well on the previous week not too far from Dekle in about 5' - 6' water.

My coworker was the first to cast and the cork went down right away. Fish On!

As usual, I am there ready with the net.
Image

Yep, right at 17".
Image

A couple of cast later he was hooked up again. This one a little over 18". He is now spoiled.
Image

We got a few more keeper fish and then Calvin hang a nice 19.8'' tournament fish.
Image

While I was busy untangling lines, wife ask "where's my cork" .... which followed immediately by the sound of drag screaming. Where's the net??? This one right at 21''
Image

The fishing slowed down, so my coworker went to get a drink, and the wife's lucky charm did the trick.
Image

Carmen decided to give reading a break to catch a fish.

looks like a good fish

Little brother backing her up.

another 19.5'' tournament fish.

the victory dance

Calvin hook up again. This one was heading to St. Marks as soon as the line came tight
Image

Redfish? No! its a gar. Sister turn to backup the little brother.
Image

Into the net
Image

Mmmmm...... What to do with it? Coworker wanted to " try it".
Image

At this point, everyone have caught a fish except me that is. But I think I am getting bit though. Bait of choice for the day
Image

Finally, my lone contribution to the fish box

Other catch worth mentioning
Image

We quit fishing to find some scallop at around 3.00 pm and limited out at 5.00 pm.

Final tally
Image

Like Ddb said, there were quite a few inconsiderate boaters. These guys ran in front of our drift. I can probably reached them with a 3 oz sinker.

Doggone Breambuster. You and ddb tore em' up. I wasn't too far north from you guys and didn't do jack as far as trout go. We had one boat WOT as we were anchored off scalloping that I thought was too close.

Yes, there're usually a few pods of pogies in the canal somewhere. We usually see them during low tide when we come in but we were lucky on Saturday to see them right off the marina on our way out - we must have over 60 of them in 3 casts. They were all 4-5'', perfect size for trout. Always have my castnet a ready when I am on the water.

Great trip, Breambuster, we need to change your name to Troutbuster. I'm thinking about going there Thursday if the rain holds off. How do you cook the gar?
