SGI Labor Day Weekend

Post by WaltDawg »

Took a long weekend and went down to St. George for a few days. I was hoping for five straight days of fishing, but Gustav had other plans.

A friend of ours,Toni from D.C., had never been kayak fishing before, so she was anxious to try it out. We decided to put in at Rattlesnake cove for her maiden voyage. She was used to a touring kayak, but it didn't take her long to adjust to a Ocean Kayak Caper.

We fished around the bars and the island for a few hours with nothing more than a few ladyfish. We made to the sandy side of Gull Island and took a break on the beach.

We made our way around the island and decided to camp out on the bars off the point. I started the day off with this little guy on a Captain Mike's spoon.

Not wanting to be outdone, Toni came up with this one five minutes later. It was her first fish out of a kayak and measured 23 inches, but we threw him back for another day.

Glad you made it down for the weekend Toni, and I hope you liked fishing out of the yak. Maybe next year we won't have to dodge a hurricane.

No care to mention the two trout that the "last time kayak fisherman" landed on his second and for real final kayak adventure on Sat. morning. If you did, then you'd have to mention that with the exception of a lady fish, you and Miller Time were skunked by a novice. LOL

Rattlesnake cove is in the state park. It is essentially the first boat ramp.

I beleive Gull island is the island at the mouth of the cove if you have a map of the island or chart of the bay, you will see the island.

That being said, I have been wrong before.

Rattlesnake Cove is actually the cove before you enter the park. The first boat ramp is in an area called East Cove. If you put in at the first boat ramp, and then paddle to your left and go around the point you will be in Rattlesnake Cove. Check out the Navigational Maps.

http://www.brainygeography.com/features ... ecove.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Once the map in the link shows up, you'll need to zoom out to see the names of the coves.

We have stayed in a house at Rattlesnake Cove for the past two years.
