9/27-28 Lanark, Topwater Kings

Post by Littoral »

Didn't actually boat one. I don't mind because the memory is cool enough.
Dog Island Shoal, east end, shallow.
The first one I hooked I saw strike laterally and I guessed big Spanish, but it looked really big. I've caught a 32" Spanish on topwater but this fish was ripping line so fast I thought I'd get spooled. I was using a light rig (2500 Saros) but with a full spool of 10lb braid I had enough line to gain ground line after the first long run. It came off right at the boat. I didn't get a good look at it but guessed really big Spanish or maybe a King.
The KIng confirmation came later when one launched about eight feet out of the water trying to strike a plug. :o Unbelievable. Since we could see the whole fish we estimated at least 36 inches. The launch happened three different times with 7 or 8 other times getting lateral strikes. My buddy had the only other hook-up and got cut shortly into the fight.
Awesome stuff. I did catch a lot of Spanish with two measuring 27 inches.
I kayaked for 2 hours Saturday afternoon and did decent on Redfish (25") and trout.
Hadn't been for quite awhile, hallelujah, hallelujah hallelujah.
Species list for the two days:
Trout
Redfish
Flounder
Grouper
Bluefish
Black Sea Bass
Spanish
Ladyfish
Wrasse
Leatherjacket
Bluerunner
Kings, sort of
No Lizardfish :D
