Inky Tue 9/30

Post by sundown »

Bit late leaving this morning so didn't get in the water till 7:30...Didn't make any difference, when I hit the flats nothing was happening at all....water glass smooth with fairly heavy haze..

I stopped at the mouth of the river and threw a topwater around the bars..nothing so I headed on up toward Aucilla to a couple spots I wanted to try...Around 8:30 mullet started jumping..fish started busting some bait pods so I dropped trolling motor and started hunting..found a long bar I'd never noticed before that was pretty high out of the water so I went down the end of it throwing ole spooky..finally got a stirke, nice red....
I had a couple more blow ups ,things was looking up! and then turned to go up the other side..I was in about 12-15" of water..fish I caught musta hit plug in 4"...Quite a sight but nothing like the next one..

I started up the other side, boat was probably 25' from the bar running parallel to it..I shot the plug up the bar and it landed about 6' from it...probably 50 ' from boat..Bout that time a fish leaves the end of the bar heading straight to it wide open...must have traveled 40'. just before he got to it, he went down and then came up and busted it ! good 24" fish....Never seen a fish go that far, I have seen bass in ponds cross shallow water to hit a top water bait but nothing like this....Had to have honed in on the sound cause the water wasn't 6" deep and is still badly stained....

Kept plugging the bars and put two more 20-22 " redfish in boat and a 23" trout....kept the trout !

About 9:30 or so the game was over....flats went dead. I idled out to deeper water and then ran out about 5 miles to take a look...looked like somebody had mowed a hayfield. grass everywhere, even had to stop and get it off the motor..

Around 10:30 I ran back to an area out of Aucilla I fish sometimes..first cast 22" trout! had to throw him back......then it was nonstop for awhile.every cast a hit from something..most of the trout were large. few shorts.threw back several 20" and better fish..then it stopped. I cranked up and ran back to where I started and the bite was back on..I marked it on gps this time ! Must have caught 35 plus good trout with more over slot than I ever caught..

It played out around 12 or so..tide was coming in strong so I headed to the creek....by the time I got there the wind was almost howling out of the west which made it pretty hard getting around with trolling motor..went back out on the flats and threw a SWA for awhile but nothing..around 3 I was back at the landing....
Good day though, I'm getting to like being able to fish this skinny water....Need to check weather, I may go back later in the week ! :-D

That sounds like a great trip. Glad to hear Aucilla is getting cranked up, I like to fish there.
