Piney Island 10/12/08

Post by WaltDawg »

I spent most of the week in the armpit of America (Miami, FL) on busines, so I was determined to get out this weekend to spite the weather. Since the wind was coming pretty good out of the east, I decided to paddle over to the West side of Piney Island looking for some cover. It was a good plan in theory, but it wasn't much help. While I was busy excercising, I managed to wet my line every now and then.

This was the highlight of the day, but it wasn't worth keeping.

I also caught a 3 or 4 of these guys. Not real sure what it is though?

I've never seen the juvenile, but the whiskers do remind me of one.

That would be a Southern Kingfish aka whiting. Glad you got out of the armpit and back to God's country.

That's what I'm talking about. I learn something new every time I visit the forum. Maybe I just have a lot to learn but I knew it was not a croaker and for all the talk about whiting, I had never seen one and I also had never seen your fish. It looks something like the sauger I caught in the dead of winter in the French Broad River in Newport, Tn. I am trusting DR and NFF on this one. Thanks for report.

Definately looks like a whiting but I have never seen one that dark. Usually they are very white/silver color.

Not bad. I am going with a Whiting also. Jsuber is correct. It's darker due to the water color, and mud rather than sand bottom. Good job!
