Keaton 11/9/08

Post by Breambuster »

I have been suffering from shallow grouper digging sickness as of late, decided to see if I can put the first keeper grouper on my bayboat. Left the marina at a little after 8 am, and stayed at the south bird rack until about 10 am catching only 1 keeper trout but did load up the livewell with pinfish.

With the wind dying down and the seas becoming less choppy, we ran out to the reef to try our luck. I guess we can call this trip partially successful as we (errrr.., I mean Calvin) did catch numerous grouper.

Here's Calvin's largest of the two red he caught.

He also caught a gag that was barely touching the 22'' mark, which we let go thinking we would run into something bigger.
Image

We also caught about half a dozen of grunts, and this flounder Dave caught.

The wind picked back up in the afternoon so we decide to do a little trolling before heading back in shore. Didnt catch any grouper like I would hope for but Calvin did catch a nice king. Didnt thought they would be gone by now as the water temp was only 67F.

You can tell he was proud of his catch.

We spent a little over an hour slinging cork and caught 3 more trout before calling it a day. The trout seems to be scattered but may be its just me losing the touch on trout fishing.

Here's what we brought home.

It was fun but driving to and returning in the dark makes for a long day. Thanks for reading.

Man...that's a bigger King than I've ever caught! Great to see an up and coming fisherman making his mark! Looks like Dave needs to start taking his cues from Calvin :) :) :)

:-D We were down sat. I thought you might be around so I hailed for you. In fact I could not get anyone to talk to me sat. How far out were you? How deep? You go to the Steinhatchee reef. Surprised you had no sea bass, we caught around a hundred with 12 keepers and 2 blues. We caught many trout but they all were .5-2" short. I caught about a 4-5lb lizard fish(thought I had my first red) :smt012

Yes, we were at the Steinhatchee reef. I keep hearing people catching a lot of seabass in the near shore hard bottom. I was hoping that we would catch some seabass as well when we were out in the deeper water but I dont see much structure at the reef so may be they dont like it there. We did catch a bunch of them little ones in the flats though, a real nuisance when you're trout fishing. Not that many short trout were caught and the 4 we brought home were all nice fish, from 17-21''. Going again this Thursday-Sunday. Give me a holler if you're out there on any of those days.
