MOTOR PROBLEM 2

Post by What a mess »

1995 115 Johnson, only at low idle poping, missing, running rough or what ever you want to call it full throtle runs great. Tried new plugs, sea foam, spray engine tuner, no love there was a crack in the rpimer on the side but it has been replaced any ideas?

Either low speed carb jets and or power pack.
Took both to correct mine a few years back.

HEY , WHAT A MESS, GENERALLY IF IT IS POWER PACK IT WILL ACT UP AT HIGHER SPEEDS, MIGHT BE A SPARK ADVANCE LEVER NOT COMING ALL THE WAY BACK, SQUIRT A LITTLE W-D 40 UP UNDER THE FLYWHEEL WHERE YOU CAN SEE THE SPARK ADVANCE ARM MOVE BACK AND FORTH, THIS WILL PROBABLY SOLVE YOUR PROBLEM.

Could be fuel or electrical, Id clean or replace the low speed jets and check the screen and diaframs in the fuel pump. If the power pak was bad it wouldnt open up at least that was my exp. I would take a close look at the coils for corrosion or bad grounds. Fun fun. 8)

I'm assuming this is a carbed motor. Try trimming the motor up a little at idle and see if it smooths out. The V4 carbed Johnsons were bad about the floats lowering and leaning the motor at idle. If trimming it up smooths it out, you might be ok if you adjust the floats a bit. If not, you'll probably have to replace the float needle valves.

I might mention that if you raise the floats too much it will flood at low speeds. You might want to take it to someone that has experience with carbed Johnsons.

When my power packs went bad the boat would idle fine but wouldnt take throttle. It sounds like your low speed needle needs cleaned/rebuilt.
