Modifying a Utility Trailer for Kayaks?

Anybody know of any links with ideas and photos for a standard 5x10 utility trailer set up for carrying kayaks?
Seems like it should be pretty easy with removable crossbars but I'd like to do it the right way the first time.
I'm also looking for a utility trailer. My WWII one is about done (literally, WWII).

Go to one of the many kayak fishing forums listed in these links and type "Kayak Trailer" in their search parameters of their forum and you will see many homemade trailers. I suggest you start with the Texas site.

I really wish I could get pictures to post on here. I made a Kayak trailer from an old boat trailer...that I'm quite proud of. (well ok...my dad did the welding). but with the cost of the steel and paint, new lights…I only have 289.00 in it.

Found out yesterday my father in law is giving me a boat trailer that we're going to set up for kayaks.
He's also giving me a utility trailer. Pretty awesome.

The problem with going the el cheapo route is that those utility trailers are painted steel and it does not take much to rust them out around salt water. The time and money you spend in modifying a utility trailer for hauling yaks might be better spent getting an aluminum trailer built for hauling yaks to begin with. I have been using the Trailex trailer for some 4-5 years now, and can highly recommend it. It is also extremely light weight and tows like a dream. I have taken it over to Mosquito Lagoon to fish and also down to Cedar Key with no problems.

I've looked over the aluminum boat trailer I'm getting and the size is perfect. I'm
not sure how it's going to turn out because my father in law will "accomplish"
the project in one day with whatever materials are around. I told him a cross bar rack
that would hold 4 kayaks would be perfect. He's good but that's about the limit he'll take for directions
before the welder gets fired up. We'll see, and I'll be very happy with it!

We have been modifying a 30 plus year old boat trailer, turned utility trailer, back to yak trailer. It is steel and very heavy steel. It still won't stand up to the salt. However, with the galvanized wheels, a good priming and paint job and a promise to never submerge it in salt water it should last several years.

With a total redo the cost is 500.00 plus. A prudent person might consider doubling that price for a new galvanized trailer. I do recommend the bunk system. It gives total support no matter the launch position. The trailer also tilts. I hope the pic will post. If not we carry two yaks on a 14 foot trailer with four bunks located two and two over the outside rails.
