Due to his inexperience I figured it would be best to start him out slow using a CT/DOA combo. I was fishing various super spooks/skitter walks. First redfish hole produced zero fish. Not even a strike. The water was tea colored and cooler than I expected at 68 degrees.
Moved out on the flats. Started deep (5-6') and could not find any fish. Moved in to 2'-3' and found a few trout here and there but nothing consistent. Put a few keepers in the boat, but the fishing was very sporadic. I caught a few fish on a redfish colored super spook while my friend caught a few on the CT/DOA and also on a Capt Mike's spoon (pink).
Moved to redfish hole number two. Put two legal reds in the boat and one really nice trout (24"). Reds were caught on CT/DOA and inline spinners. Could not get one to eat a topwater for some reason.
Water quality was very poor in each area we fished. You would lose sight of your bait after it dropped 8-9" below the surface. Water temp warmed up by lunch to 72 degrees. Clouds cleared up around 11 am, but the wind really picked up and the fish seemed to turn off so we called it a day around 1 pm. At the end of the day, my friend had caught more fish than me including the big trout and it seemed that he had forgotten his problems.
Learned that the batteries in the camera were dead after we put the first redfish in the boat, so no pics this trip.
Next weekend I will make sure my camera is ready to go.
