I'm heading to st george island plantation sunday morning for 7 days of fishing with family. started reading about pompano of fly and at the last minute i'm exchanging a nice trout reel I just purchased for a saltwater 8wt fly rod outfit. The last time i was saltwater fly fishing was in 1999!! Whoa it's beena while!

Are the pomps hitting the beaches yet? what sort of surf flyfishing oppertunities can i expect? assuming the weather and water clearity are agreeable.
I'm really interested in fishing Crooked island in mexico beach! it looks like a fly fishing wonderland from google satelite images. looks like it has more sand bar structure and shallower than other beaches in the area. How is the surf and lagoon fishing there? I may rent a kayak and fish crooked island for a day or two. I can pack lots of water and lunch and just explore the area with a fly.
is the surf pretty shallow for wading out far? how about the lagoon? is there good lush wadable grass flats in the lagoon?
How is the pompano/redfish fishing on the surf of crooked island? Do you think there is a chance of sight casting to tailing/feeding pomps and reds early morning in the surf? ....and flounder, macs and jacks for that matter.
hope to hear from you pompapros

thanks
