Econfina 5-16-2009
My buddy Justin and I struck out from Moultrie at 5:00 Saturday morning to do a little scouting and sight seeing out of Ecky. After a pretty swift ride down and getting him a new license we were launched and headed down the river with no real plan but high expectations.
We hit our first spot around 7:45 and started casting. Justin started us off having a bad day. This was his first trip with his new custom rod and Shimano spinning reel. He made 2 casts and I heard him cussing, somehow while retrieving his sppon the line got caught under the drag knob and caused a heck of a mess . He wound up pulling half of the line off and rerigging everything. The next cast he lost a new Mirrolure . We were drifting a CT and GULP! behind the boat and even managed to birds nest it while dragging.
We were fishing along a shoreline and hitting some creek mouths and seeing a few mullet jumping and getting a few short strikes but nothing in the box yet. Justin losses a maybe keeper at the boat and we talk about taking him back to the truck before something bad happened.
I switched from the Super Spook to a twitch bait and after 2-3 casts the drag sings and live is good again.
First keeper redfish of '09 . He went 26 1/2" and my cheap BPS scale said 5-6#.
We kept fishing and Casey Cook and his chick, stopped and talked and went off to try to find some trout. They were dang hard to come by. Justin and I both managed a few sail cats and a hard head.
We made a few moves and a bunch of casts and bait changes and ate some crackers and drank some beer.
Justin asked me if I wanted to net his trout and I said "HELL YEAH and boated this little fella.
He went 17" with a really messed up tail. We both had enough for sandwiches.
A few more moves and bait changes and a couple of beers and we called it a day. We had the boat loaded and headed home by 4:00 with 2 fish and 100 mile ride back to the house.
I even made it back in time to take Christy to the TCCHS prom. We caught some fish, nothing broke and I even got a few bonus points at home.

Thanks for report! Lack of salinity on flats makes for a tough time finding trout for sure!
