Staked out & Stuck for a moment - 05/30/09

Post by Chalk »

Got an invite to chase after some cookie monsters from my neighbor - Ricky. The night before the trip I spent a little time making some cookies for the trip - a couple of nice EP cookies and a few cockroach cookies were made spun up for the days trip. Meet up with Ricky and headed out about 0700 and passed the breakers and noted that the water was junk so we moved on down the bank. Finally found a nice place to set up and see if we could feed some cookies to the cookie monster.

It took about 30 minutes and I saw this silhouette coming down the line - up high and waging it's tail. I make the call - "fish - no it's a shark...I"m not sure...no it's a fish" Too late and the cookie monster swims by without any cookies  .

This pattern continued through the day with only one other shot at a cookie monster - nobody to blame for not feeding the cookies to the cookie monster but ourselves. The adrenaline received from the sight of the fish and the thought of the ensuing fight was worth the price of defeat.

After it got to rough to hang out on the outside we ventured into the bay looking for a redfish. Armed with only a fly rod and a push pole we ventured into a creek with the speculation of tide in our advantage and wind to our disadvantage for getting out. Ricky pushed the Hewes through the mud and over the sand and we saw a few reds that were out of range of the boat's drafting and my casting ability. We finally had a nice red in front of the boat. The fly curled through the air and landed in front of the fish. The turn was made - the gills flared, the mouth opened....the fly sat still...the fish struck and bolted but missed the fly that was happily sitting there waiting to be eaten. The adrenaline was great - the fish with it would have surely been too much to handle  . We decided that the tide was not coming in but leaving and it took alot to get in this place - we were fishing on credit and time for payment was running out. Long story short - we toted and pushed a 19ft Hewes about a football field.

Ended the day with Cookie Monster's 0-10 and Redfish 0-5 with one foul ball and a 30 minute workout with Hewes

Another great day on the water - it's adventures like this that keep me wanting to do it more and more....Thanks for the invite Ricky.
