NFGFC June 6, 2009

Post by Reel Cowboy »

Christy and I left the house REAL early this morning in hopes of finding some trout for the NFGFC tournament.
We made it to the Econfina River ramp and were one of the first boats there. After a quick chat with Bow'd Up and giving him a new Matthew's Fishin' Styx rod. we launched and headed down the river with what I thought was a pretty good plan.
Our first stop produced a 15 1/4" trout on a flutter jig and GULP! right at the dang boat. It was 7:30 and we had one in the live well. I was about to pick it up and right cast when the little devil ate it. A little knuckle bumping, no skunk today, and we went back to fishing. Not much doing so we made a move up the coast.
The rest of the day went like this, cast, reel, cast, reel, move, cast, reel, cast reel, move back to where we started. About 10:00 Christy was good and aggravated. There was some discussion of selling it all and taking up golf. She started trying to get a little sun and I kept us moving around trying to find some fish. I did find some reds feeding on a grassy point beside a creek mouth but they weren't interested in our lures.
At 1:00, we went back to where we started and started a new drift.
This lil' feller ate a jerk bait and Christy swore it was a cobia.

He went 23 1/2" and weighed 3.34#. We had our kicker but we needed 3 more to go with her and bucket trout. But the fish gods had other plans for us.
We fished from 2 1/2' out to 7' and a temp range from 77.5* (1st trout) to 80.2* (2nd trout)

The final tally for the day:
(2) keeper trout
(1) short
(2) rock bass
(1) catfish
(1) toad fish

We were on the trailer at 2:30 and at Jerry's shortly thereafter.
We had a great time at the weigh in with some really nice fish weighed and some great raffle prizes donated by our sponsors.
We are some tired folks but it was worth it.

Thanks to CC and Pat for a well run tourney and Junior did a heck of a job on the raffle.

Golf is fun, but you have no one to blame but yourself when things go bad.
Fishing, on the other hand, you get to blame weather, other boaters, faulty tackle, bad tides, etc.
Catching, gets praise no matter the other conditions.
Hang in there.
None of us catch 'em every time.
WHOSE FISH IS IT?
