6/13-6/14 Turkey Point area

Post by boggob »

Went out late Saturday and was on the water by 5. Wanted to try chicken gizzards for the bait trap. So filled it up and put it out near the Marine Lab. Fished and caught the usual suspects: black tips, ladyfish, & catfish. My lady caught herself a rather large Spanish (probably the largest I have ever seen) and a few short trout.

Drowned some cut ladyfish, which resulted in more sharks but as a small shark was waiting to be brought in and released, something very large made a pass at it and erupted the surface. We are not sure what it was but it was big.

Returned Sunday, saw the sun rise, and checked the trap. There was nothing but a crab, a starfish, a tiny pinfish, and a small rock bass. So the fishing with live bait plans had to be modified. Moved the trap farther west and headed even farther west and began to drift. It was basically a replay of Saturday with sharks, cats, and ladies with the occassional barely legal trout.

Floating grass made topwater a pain but had some blow-ups and caught a couple. We primarily used gulp, white being the hot color and I also fished green bassassassin jerk baits, all were rigged weightless to help avoid the grass. We left around 11a as it was beginning to get really hot.

It was not stellar but not a total bust either. As always, it was nice being out on the water.

The sharks were definitely out in the turkey point area. We did pretty well on trout on Friday, but they all had worms. The sharks were fun to play with but get annoying after awhile. The guides are out in force in that area now too...
