Help me decide on a motor please.

Post by salty tiger »

I've narrowed it down to the following
Etec
Yammy 4s
Optimax

It will be a 90 pushing an Andros Backwater 18 (hopefully).

I'm really intrigued with the Etec, so if any Etec owners could chime in that would be great.

Yamaha is the only choice unless you like to spend time in the shop. I am not trying to pick a fight with anyone but I know from experience and have several friends who run boats for a living. Yamaha quality is hard to beat.

My 150 Optimax has been bullet proof but the 90 Yammy my Dad has on his boat has been abused and never had any problems.

Yamaha would be my choice. I've had mine for almost 10 years and other then replacing about 6 props and a couple water pumps it's been purdy bulletproof.

My buddie has the E-Tec and is quite good buddies with his mechanic and now has Sea Tow as well I know the folks where I fish love the Yamie's.
Other than a bunch of trouble he really likes his motor.

Check out the Honda's. I'm not real sure about the 90HP range but I've been studing the 50 pretty hard. The 50HP Honda is lighter than all of the four strokes and also the E-tec.

I am 5 years into a Yamaha F150. I know some who love their Etecs too. Look at any marina and see what you see more of.

You took the words out of my mouth! Walk around a marina or boat show and Yamahas will out number all the others combined.

I have 8 saltwater boats at my shop right now: 6 Yammy's, 1 Merc, 1 airboat

Apparently the oddball in the bunch, but I have a 90 optimax and have been happy with it. Great fuel mileage and a very quite motor.

I must also one of the oddballs, but the 115HP EFI 4 stroke Mercury pushing my 19 foot 2007 Sea Pro bay boat has been outstanding so far. I almost didn't buy the boat because it wasn't a Yamaha, but no problems so far.

I have had my ETEC for three years and love it. No problems, no required maintenace for three years. Just had the three year check up. Cost me $300 and that included replaceing the water pump. No other maintenance or repairs. Motor is good on gas and uses very little oil. Check the maintenace requirements on the four strokes.

Go Etec.

I have had several types of motors. Had a couple of Mercurys and didn't have good luck with them. Had a great 25hp Johnson one time. I am now on my 3rd Yamaha and I am certainly sold on them. Mine is a 2 stroke 90 and I LOVE it!
