Sep. 26 St Marks

Post by konrad »

I haven't seen anyone post a report on offshore fishing in a while so I decided to even though it isn't good.

Got to the fort at day break and headed out to the flats to catch pins. Loaded up with 3 dozen and hit the buoys on the way out. Caught 2 small cobia off one of them. Maybe 27/28 inches. Stopped by some natural bottom north of the shoals, nothing was biting. Went out by buoy 24 and hit 3 places and nothing but a couple short grouper. Went out another 6-8 miles SE to some natural bottom and picked up two short Red's and one short Gag. Stopped by another place on the way in. It was in-between 24 and bog Ballard and caught one small gag. Swung by Dog Ballard to see if any cobia where around and nothing. On the way back in let the remaining 2 dozen pin fish go.

We covered allot of water with very little action. My advice would to either stay inshore or go out past 50 feet. Nothing much in the 20 to 40 feet area or at least that was the case where I was. We used live pinfish and jigs. Maybe next weekend.

To fish, or not to fish, . . . those are the answers.

Made a trip out of OR last Friday - nuthin' but grunts! Had to send the boys down with the steel sticks to get dinner.
Cheer up, it gets worse...I did, and it did!!

Two and three weeks ago I dived 24 barge. The first trip 3 weeks ago I saw 2 short grouper a one jew fish. Two weeks ago I went to the same spot and saw 30 shorts along with a few keeper grouper. I even shot one that was pushing 30 inches. I assumed after last week’s dive the fishing would be good. guess I was wrong. Next week bringing the tanks along. Scratch that, dove season opens.

We were out of St. Mark's on the 26th. Only went to 24 feet. Caught a nice flounder on one of Capt. Salty's finest frozen sardines, but nothing else good. Trolled for a while too. Maybe the cooler weather will push the big ones in soon.
