Econfina -- A week late

Post by dolphinatic »

I've been too busy lately to find time to post, so here goes. Starting with the NFGFC Econfina tourney: Showed up at my buddy's house at 5:00am to find him unloading his gear from the boat :-? He informs me that he wont be able to make it, so we make a few calls to find a replacement. No luck at 5:00am  I decide to just take the truck and boat and go at it alone. Showed up at Econfina at 6:32am and Casey informs me that he will still allow me to enter the tourney. Still no luck with a partner, so I wait till daylight and launch the 18' Largo. Ran east to spot #1 to find no one else around. 2nd cast produces a nice 19" trout  Within the next 25 minutes, I have 5 fish in the box with the shortest going 17" One trout at 19.9999999", so I keep looking for the 20+ fish I need. Over the next 30 minutes, I hook 3 HUGE fish and lose everyone of them at the boat, just out of the reach of the net :o The last one takes my favorite topwater plug :x If only I would have had a "net man." I stay in the same area all day and manage 20+ trout with my largest going 21" Back at the scales, I weigh in 9.6 lbs.

I get rained out Monday, so I decided to head back down to look at another boat for work. My buddy tags along and we decide to run out and try to beat the rain for a bit. We stop at spot #1 and I manage 1 keeper at 18" The other 3 boats in the area see us catch a few fish and move in right on top of us :x We move farther east and set up drift again. This time we get into the trout good and here comes the other 3 boats again.....UGH!!! The bite is so good, we decide to just keep fishing with these guys right on top of us. I'm working the topwater about 30 yards out from the boat when....WHAM...something HUGE comes up and explodes the plug!!!!! Luckily, whatever it was missed. I think it might have been a tarpon, but really not sure. All I know is it wasn't a trout :o The rain starts to move in fast, so we decide to boogie. We get right back to the mouth of the river, and the bottom falls out :smt009 We get soaked all the way back to the ramp. We load up in the rain with our 2 man limit. Not bad for 1.5 hours, lots of topwater grass & a-holes that can't fish their own spots. Sure beat work!
