Wakulla River 11/15

Post by Charles »

Hit the river with my daughter this afternoon. Her in the kayak, me in my canoe. Clear water, cool breeze, warm sunshine. We were kind of "fishing", but mostly we were just getting her stick time in the 'yak.

Remember the snook trees (mangroves) I've posted pictures of before? Well they've started working. Checking under the docks for bass as we drifted by, after casting to them, I saw what I at first thought was a gar laying just under the surface. But it didn't look right so I decided it must be a mullet. But it didn't look right so I decided it must be a bass. But it didn't look right so I decided it must be a "HOLYCRAPWHAT'STHATDOINGHERE???" :-?

The two biggest bass I saw were out in the eel grass, away from other apparent cover. The first I saw swimming away just under the surface after I spooked it. The second tried to take my yellow Snagless Sally home with it, but came unstuck.

Long time no see Chuck. How sure were you on the Soapfish sighting?

Well, being as I was standing in my canoe almost of top of it when it swam off in the slick, clear water; I would say I'm almost as sure as if I had held it in my hands.

If it had been a bass I would say it would have gone about 3 lbs., maybe a little more.

When it spooked it swam off like it wasn't in any real hurry, but it wasn't wasting any time either.

Of course I didn't have a camera with me. Even if I had, I wouldn't have been ready for that shot. :smt010
